Children & early orthodontics

Sometimes the best time to look is before all adult teeth arrive.

PretoriaSmile describes Phase I treatment as problem-focused early care, typically during mixed dentition when a child has both primary and permanent teeth.

Request a child assessment
What early assessment looks for

Growth, eruption and bite development.

Early evaluation does not mean every child needs immediate braces. It gives the orthodontist an opportunity to identify problems that may benefit from earlier intervention or simply monitoring.

01

Space

Severe crowding or lack of space for emerging permanent teeth.

02

Bite

Developing open bite, deep bite, underbite or other bite relationships.

03

Eruption

Teeth emerging in unusual positions or a pattern that requires closer attention.

Parents’ practical guide

Bring the questions you already have.

Tell reception your child’s age, whether a dentist has referred you, what you have noticed, and whether there are current X-rays or dental records. The appointment request below helps structure that information without making a diagnosis online.

Good reasons to request an assessment

  • Your dentist has suggested an orthodontic opinion
  • You are concerned about jaw growth or bite
  • There is marked crowding or an eruption concern
  • A habit such as thumb or finger sucking is affecting the bite
